How to turn an old phone into a baby monitor: step-by-step guide
5-minute read
You don’t need to buy a new device for a baby monitor. An old iPhone, Android phone, iPad or laptop becomes a camera for your child’s room as soon as you open babycamera.app in its browser. You watch the video and sound in the Baby Camera app on your iPhone, iPad or Mac.
The camera side needs no app, no account and no subscription. Video and sound travel directly and encrypted between your devices; they are never sent to a server or recorded.
What you need
- The camera device: an old phone, tablet or computer with a camera and an up-to-date browser (Safari, Chrome, Edge or Firefox). Android works too.
- The watching device: an iPhone, iPad or Mac with the Baby Camera app from the App Store.
- Internet access on both devices; for the most reliable connection, both on the same Wi-Fi network.
- A charging cable for the camera device.
Steps
Prepare the old phone
Plug the phone in; a camera with the screen on drains the battery fast. Update the browser and the operating system: live video needs a current Safari or Chrome.
Turn on Do Not Disturb (Focus) so notifications and calls don’t interrupt the stream. The phone doesn’t need a SIM card; Wi-Fi is enough.
Most browsers keep the screen from locking while the camera page is open; to be safe, set auto-lock to a long interval or “Never” (iPhone: Settings › Display & Brightness › Auto-Lock; Android: Screen timeout).
Open the camera page and grant permissions
In the phone’s browser go to babycamera.app and tap “Use this device as camera”. Read and accept the three-point consent: the camera is only for watching your own child with everyone in the room aware, and it is not a medical or safety device.
The browser asks for camera and microphone access; allow both. A QR code and the camera preview appear. If the device has more than one camera (front/back), switch with the on-screen button; the back camera usually gives a sharper picture.
Place the phone in the room
Put the phone where it sees the whole crib or bed and where your child can’t reach it: a shelf, a nightstand or an inexpensive phone stand is enough. Make sure the cable doesn’t reach the bed and can’t be pulled.
For night viewing a small night light or light from a door left ajar is usually enough; phone cameras don’t see in complete darkness.
Pair it with your iPhone
On your iPhone, iPad or Mac open the Baby Camera app, tap “Scan QR code” and scan the code on the camera screen. Live video starts within a few seconds; tap “Turn sound on” to hear the room.
Once paired, the camera is remembered in the app, so the next night you open it from your saved cameras with one tap. The QR code and link are the key to the camera; use them only on your own devices.
Dim the screen and pick the quality
Tap “Dim screen” on the camera so the phone doesn’t light up the room; streaming continues and the “Camera on” notice stays visible. The notice can’t be hidden by design.
On the watching device leave the quality on auto or choose 480p, 720p or 1080p. On mobile data turn on Saver mode: instead of continuous video you get sound and a photo at the interval you choose, plus a notification when there is sound in the room.
Tips
- Use it like an audio baby monitor. If you only want to listen, turn on Saver mode. Sound keeps playing while your iPhone is locked, and with the screen off it uses less battery.
- More than one viewer. Both parents can watch at the same time: the camera opens a separate connection for each viewer and shows how many people are watching.
- A laptop works too. No old phone? A laptop’s webcam does the job. Open the same address in the laptop’s browser; the steps are the same.
- Watching from another network. The most reliable connection is when both devices are on the same Wi-Fi. It can work from outside too, but some mobile carriers and hotel networks block direct connections.
Good to know
- Baby Camera is not a medical or safety device; it doesn’t track breathing, sleep or health, and the connection can drop. Don’t rely on it alone for your child’s safety.
- It is only for watching your own child, with everyone in the room aware. It can’t be used as a hidden camera; the camera device always shows a “Camera on” notice.
- Keep the charging phone on an open, hard surface, not on a pillow, under a blanket or inside the bed.
Try it now
The camera side is free in the browser. To watch, you buy the Baby Camera app once on the App Store; it works on all your iPhones, iPads and Macs with the same Apple Account.
